You  know years ago I used to think that people who said they were overweight because of hormones were just being total cop outs. Yeah, I was the one who chuckled around the  office water cooler at these hugely obese co- workers who would complain and complain about being fat because of their hormones. It was probably cruel to laugh under my breath, but I was just an ‘ immature  20 something year old know it all’ . :)  And I always thought that what calories you took in and what you expend was the reason why you were overweight or not.

Well, for the most part there is no denying that. But hormonal imbalances in your body can play a huge role in the amount of  fat that is stubbornly stored in your body.

Now here are the four hormones that can play a big role of whether not you are obese or not and what you can do about it.

1.Insulin – This regulates the sugar (blood glucose) in your body. If your blood sugar goes to high then Insulin kicks in and causes blood sugar to go way down. This causes almost unstoppable hunger pains which in turn causes the increase in body fat.

Solution : Keep an eye on sugary and starchy foods  like candy, bread, bagels, pasta and such. Remember Carbs like these turns into blood sugar and will result in Insulin Spikes causing the fat to pile up. Reach for fruits when you feel a Insulin spike !

2. Estrogen – Everyone including Men have this Hormone. Just the right amounts is fine and productive to the body. But too much causes an increase in fat. Your metabolism slows down and the also thyroid gland.

Solution : Take in fiber in foods you eat like whole grains, fruits , and vegetables. Also having more than two cups of coffee a day increases Estrogen and too much alcohhol does too.Watch out for chicken, cattle, and dairy products because many of these contain large amounts of Estrogen compounds.

3. Cortisol –  This hormone is made in the adrenal gland and is stress related. If you stress out too much levels of Cortisol will increase. And guess what guys ?? You will get excess of body fat stored up.

Solution: try to avoid chronic stress and eat more rich cottage cheese , leafy veggies, whole grains, mushrooms, and fruits ( especially berries).

4. Leptin – Fat cells in your body produce this hormone.At stable levels, this hormone is an appetite suppressant. But when levels are just to low, this signals your body to store more fat. And this means a fattter you and a bigger you !

Solution : Get enough sleep which produces more Leptin. Eat more fish. Eat more slowlyas Leptin will not kick in until about 20 minutes thru your  meal. And also get enough Zinc.

I hope you are not the idiot I was 15-20 years ago. Its funny how the transformation of the human brain works during a person’s lifetime ! Here I thought I knew everything in my twenties and late teens. As I get older I continue to learn more and realize how dumb I really am. Especially with kids now !! ;)

Bottom line: Hormones play a key role in obesity and a unhealthy body. Keep them in balance and you are on the right path to losing weight and looking hot :)

I can say with a resounding YES, YES,  YES !!! And another YES !! In other wards HELL YES !!!! ;)

I know as a kid for Halloween we used to literally get grocery sized paper bags full of reeses cups, sweet tarts, milk ways, m&ms , lollipops and all sorts of other sugar filled goodies. We would then proceed to consume all of it within 2 or 3 days. You guys know exactly what I am talking about. Dont pretend you don’t lol.  Of course back then,  as a kid our young and high powered metabolisms could burn off any of this crap within a few days. And we went about our daily lives unaffected by this  onslaught of sugar filled food !

But as time passes and we turn into adults we  come to the realization that eating like this does do damage to our bodies and puts us on a road to very unhealthy lives and potentially Obesity (at least for most of us) !

To put it simple Fat doesn’t make you fat Sugar makes you fat. Bottom line !!

The fact is Sugar is an addictive type drug. Much like a drug like Heroin, the more you get the more you want.You can actually get the shakes much like narcotics if you do not continue to consume enough Sugar. And when I talk about Sugar its not just  hershey bars and Famous Amos cookies. I also include those Carbs that quickly convert to Sugar. These include breads, bagels, rolls, crackers, and more.. And with this rapid conversion to Sugar there will be a spike in insulin and with high insulin there will be a prevention of the break down of body fat.

When you are on Sugar your Brain signals insulin to jump in and regulate it. Glucose levels then go way down. As a result,  the adrenal glands have to step in and release Cortisol which is a fat producing hormone And the more Cortisol released the more fat your body will have.

Blood sugar levels crash and you become irritable, sluggish , and mentally and physically zapped.

The body’s mechanismin all of us  is really not designed to be able to cope with these rapid and sudden changes in Sugar levels. And eating to much will cause overload and eventually puts you on the track to Obesity. As well as other complications like diabets, heart disease, stroke, liver disease and kidney disease and more !!

So as I sign off here I just want to let you know you CAN eat that snickers bar every once in a while and it will not hurt you…… but just  keep it in MODERATION and keep it all in PERSPECTIVE ! Which has always been my motto in this Blog  ;)
